Tyson, thoughts? I bet you it would never happen, but is blockchain voting or end-to-end verifiable voting valuable? Feasible?

Depending on the model they adopt for committing the data, it doesn't provide something inherently more secure than just having a voting database and then providing access to a dump of the data.

I think the biggest problem with online voting is how easily data is stolen / manipulated. With mailed ballots or appearing in person, you at least need to show up somewhere to do it which keeps Igor from batching scripts with breached equifax data to submit R votes day and night. There are things we could do to take us towards an online voting system (universal ID, voting PIN, auditing / reporting system for submitted votes, etc.), but I don't think your average intelligence American has the capacity or care to handle these.

That’s a shame. I remember that wallet code generator, and it made me think blockchain would be a much safer system, but I guess you would need a rigid voter registration to verify each “wallet.”

Man, I had almost forgot about Equifax, too...

Verifying the wallets is actually the easiest part of it, its just comparing keys. Blockchain besides being a buzzword is just a decentralized technology concept that isn't in itself more secure than any other available encrypted database - as usual, the vulnerabilities lie in the endpoints. For example, what if the wallet generator program was compromised and the private key was emailed to Igor and submitted before you could even vote? Wouldn't matter if it was blockchain, mysql, mongodb, a text file on Hillary's cleanly wiped email server, etc.

Something like bitcoin benefits from a decentralized system since its an ongoing ledger of transactions. A one time vote cast for candidates does not need to constantly stay online and evolve - the tech isn't really appropriate to the purpose.
